Ensemble Serse is a period band of young international musicians founded in 2006 whose aim is to provide a platform to showcase and engage young emerging talent as well as to present neglected dramatic works to the public from the 18th century in historically informed productions. All of the operas we present are performed on period instruments. The inspiration behind the ensemble is the stunning operatic virtuosity of the early eighteenth century, a virtuosity that envelops a wealth of unjustly neglected works which have been left to gather dust on library shelves. The personal benefits are also considerable. Because these works have not been heard for the better part of three centuries, our musicians get the chance to take a unique place in musical history. We have to devise the dramatic interpretation, musical cadenzas and ornamentation ourselves without reference to any models. It is daunting work, but it is also very exciting to undertake this work with a sense of historical responsibility on the one hand, and the strong desire to entertain on the other. The ensemble's motto seems rather appropriate: Aut viam inveniam aut faciam - attributed to Hannibal - which means "I shall either find a way or make one.")
